Vanderlust Vans FAQ
If you believe your personal insurance covers your rental, upon booking please email us a copy of the insurance and where the policy shows such coverage limit. We will verify your insurance coverage. You will ultimately be the financial responsible party for any damages caused. If failed providing proof of insurance, difference in pricing will be collected prior to pick up date, and we reserve the right to cancel your booking.
If you don’t have personal insurance that covers rental cars, you must select option “Claim on Vanderlust insurance” when booking. Our insurance provider is MBA insurance – a specialist on overland vehicle rental insurance. Our policy deductible is $1,000 for collision, and $1,000 for conversion.
If you choose the option “claim on Vanderlust insurance” during booking, here are our coverages:
- Liability Excess: $1,000,000
- Liability Bodily Injury: $100,000
- Liability Property Damage: $25,000
- Combined Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily/Property Damage: $25,000
- Medical Payments $2,000
- Comprehensive Deductible: $1,000
- Collision Deductible: $1,000
- Conversion Deductible: $1,000
Typically, our pick-up time is 3:00 PM and drop-off time is 11:00 am. This allows us to thoroughly inspect the vehicle, conduct necessary maintenance, and prepare it for the next rental. We will try our best to accommodate your early pickup or late return requests, up to 2 hours, depending on prior & post reservations.
If you are picking up or returning the van between 8pm to 8am (late evening or early morning), we may use lockboxes for key exchange.
There are three categories of charges made up your total:
- Your basic rental fee. You have the option to choose claim with our insurance or without. 11% tax (Anchorage 8%, State of Alaska 3%) will be added to your basic rental fee.
- $150 set up & cleaning fee.
- Your “add on” selections, and airport delivery fees if you choose “Airport” as either pick up or drop off location.
In addition, all reservations will be held a $1,000 security deposit, to be returned after inspection of the vans, within 48 hours of trip ending.
Yes. If you choose Airport Delivery and/or Drop Off, $50-$100 fee is automatically included in your rental fee. To avoid this fee, choose to pick up and drop off at Vanderlust Office. Taxi is typically under $25 from the airport to our office.
We may park at long term parking area if delivery time is between 8pm to 8am. You will be responsible for parking fee when exiting the parking area. Please do not use garage to exit as our vans do not make the clearance, vans will be damaged.
- Thorough Cleaning: This includes cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces, such as countertops, tables, seating areas, and sleeping quarters. Cleaning solutions that are effective against bacteria and viruses may be used.
- Sanitization: High-touch areas like door handles, steering wheels, control panels, and switches are given extra attention to ensure proper sanitization. Bedding (sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers) and towels will be washed and replaced with fresh ones for each rental. Any dirty dishes will be washed again before putting back in the van.
- Exterior Cleaning: The exterior of the campervan, including the body, windows, and wheels, is typically cleaned to remove dirt and bugs.
A cassette toilet is provided for emergency use, we expect you to dump it and clean it before returning the van. Upon returning, we bleach clean the toilet again, if we are unable to clean it to our satisfication, a $150 fee will be charged to replace it to ensure the next renter has a clean toilet to use.
All vans are equipped with:
- Bedding (blankets and pillows)
- Towels
- Basic cleaning products
- Plates and bowls
- Silverware
- Pots, pans, cooking utensils
- Coffee mugs, cups
- Coffee maker
- Induction or propane cooktop
- Paper towels, toilet paper
- Dish washing supplies
- Portable speaker
We offer a cassette toilet for every van and some of our vans have either an indoor or outdoor shower. Please check each van’s page that shows characters of each van. A cassette toilet is provided for emergency use, we expect you to dump it and clean it before returning the van, or $150 fee will be charged to replace it.
125 miles per day (averaged over the entire trip), this is 25% more than market standard.
Extra miles will be charged for $0.35/mile
- Our campervans are not allowed to be on the following highways: Entire Dalton Hwy, Elliot Hwy past mile 28, McCarthy Road (you can drive to Chitna then fly to McCarthy to visit Kennecott or Wrangell). We may use Bluetooth tracking devices for monitoring. If you violate these restrictions, we reserve the right to charge you an $800 fee plus the cost to fix any damage done to the van.
- Smoking or vaping is strictly prohibited. Violations will be billed at 100% of the odor and stain removal service we hire, up to $500.
- We love fur babies. Our van could be pet friendly, depending on the size, age and behavior of the pets. Please communicate before booking with pets.
- If you went fishing, do not place unpackaged raw fish in the fridge. It is a nightmare to remove the smell. You can rent an extra cooler for $30.
- We will send you video links at least a week prior to your pick up date, it is required to watch the demo video (about 10min). We are here to answer any questions you have!
- During check-in, please allow at least 10 minutes to inspect the van and practice the functions you viewed in the demo video.
- Prior to returning the van, please ensure fuel level is full and the toilet is clean. You do not need to fill up the fresh water tank but please empty the grey waster water tank(s). You do not need to clean the van or do laundry, these services are included in your $150 set up fee.
- During check-out, please allow at least 10 minutes for us to inspect the van.
We love fur babies and generally allow pets! It depends on size, age and behavior of the pets. Please communicate before booking with pets. If approved, additional $80 will be charged as additional cleaning will be required. Service animal is always welcome, extra cleaning fee rule apply.
Summer Season (May 1st to September 30th):
100% refund if cancellation is 3 months in advance of your trip start date.
50% refund if cancellation is between 3 months to 45 days in advance of your trip start date.
No refund if cancellation is within 45 days of your trip start date.
All refunds are subject to 5% processing fee.
Winter Season (October 1st to April 30th following year):
100% refund if cancellation is 2 weeks in advance of your trip start date.
No refund if cancellation is within 2 weeks of your trip start date.
All refunds are subject to 5% processing fee.
Yes we do. Please contact us for rentals that are more than 30 days.
Please note that there will be no fresh water during winter rental, between October 1st to April 30th of the following year. We winterize the water lines using antifreeze.
Solar panels may not be properly during the winter due to lack of daylight and snow coverage on the panels. Heater and other functions will work.
